How to Market Your Small Business on a Budget
Most small business owners know how hard it can be to generate new customers without breaking the bank. It seems entrepreneurs are constantly bombarded with advertising options that cost a fortune. SEO services want hundreds, or even thousands of dollars to get you on the front page of Google. Advertising on radio or television is also an expensive venture for a small business owner. Even archaic services like the phone book want to charge outrageous rates for a small ad in their yellow pages.
How does a small business owner generate clientele on a minimal budget? They have to be creative and willing to go the extra mile. Let's start with the Internet; any business owner must have a listing on Google and Bing. These are the two predominant search engines online. Start by adding your free business listing on Google places and in Bing's Business Portal. Create a dynamic profile that includes a well written description of your business, high quality photos and your hours of operation. Be sure and ask any of your existing customers to take a moment to review your business on Google or Bing. Quality reviews are crucial to getting clients to call or patronize your business. There's nothing wrong with asking a current customer of yours to go online and give an honest review.
If your business does not already have a website, it's time to create one. You can build your own high quality website by using Intuit's Homestead service and it will cost you less than $10 a month to operate. You can use Homestead's site builder software and literally build your own website in a few hours. You simply choose a template, add your logo and images, write a description and create any other pages you desire. However, these sites are all the same and you can easily end up looking like your competition. You can use a service like simple13.com. Here you can get a complete unique web site with email marketing and social media for less than $800. Why pay a web company thousands for a website, when you can build your own or get one for around $500?
Business owner interested in a quick influx in business at a limited profit margin can consider using services like Groupon. You can offer a discounted price for your product or services and your offer will reach thousands of interested buyers via email. Groupon takes a percentage of each package sold, so make sure if you pursue this route you instill enough profit in your deal to make it worthwhile. This can be a great way to give your business a financial shot in the arm and create mass sales in a short period of time.
Another way to get your company's information online is by producing a YouTube video meant to attract customers. Shoot some footage of your business in action and use an editing program to create a one minute promotional video to post online. You can even search on craigslist for voiceover talent to narrate your video at a low cost. Once your video is complete, be sure and title it using keywords that relate to your business. In other words, if you have a carpet cleaning service in Denver, Colorado -- you would title your video "Denver Carpet Cleaning" or "Carpet Cleaning in Denver, Colorado". This helps your video appear in the search results when a potential client types these terms into a search engine.
As you can see, there are a few excellent ways to advertise your business at a minimal cost. Try brainstorming with other local business owners to create unique ways to get the word out about your business. Don't forget how important word of mouth advertising can be and let everyone know about your business without using high pressure sales. The more advertising avenues you try, the more apt you are to create a steady stream of customers.
